Malta 113k Triathlon and the Malta Triathlon Federation have today announced that the Garmin Malta 113k Triathlon, to take place on Sunday 17th May in B’Bugia, has been, for the second year running,  designated as the Malta National Long Distance Triathlon Championships and will also be eligible for points in the Triathlete of the Year Award.

A staple fixture in the Maltese Triathlon calendar the Garmin Malta 113k Triathlon attracts competitors from all levels and has in recent years also attracted a good number of foreign participants.

The race, which is now in its ninth year has got it all, an open water swim set in the picturesque St. George’s Bay, uphill challenges for the bike segment and a relatively flat route for the run.  The race is open to both individuals and relay teams. The race covers a total distance of 113 kilometres split into a 1.9 kilometre swim, a 90 kilometre cycle and a half marathon, i.e. a 21 kilometre run.

“From the interest that this race has generated in the past years we should be expecting an increase in international participation’ said Charlie Demanuele, Race Organiser, double Ironman finisher and experienced athlete. “It is great to see many local athletes return to the race venue year after year, making it a very popular race on the Triathlon Calendar in Malta”.

For the second year running this race has been designated as the Malta Long Distance Triathlon Championships and points towards the Triathlete of the Year will be given to all those completing the individual segment of the Race. This ensures that triathletes in Malta can compete in all triathlon race spectrum without having to go abroad.

“The Malta Triathlon Federation and the organisers of the Garmin Malta 113k Triathlon share the same common objective of developing and growing the sport of triathlon, as well as providing athletes of all ages and abilities the opportunity to take part in this challenge.”  said Cyprian Dalli, President of the Malta Triathlon Federation.  "having this race in our annual Triathlete of the Year Points Scheme is a tangible expression of how much the Federation believes in the potential of this race'.

The popularity of the event has resulted in a substantial amount of foreign tri-athletes signing up for the race, giving it more of an international feel to all those taking part. Whilst the main focus of the race will be the individual athletes undertaking the full distance the organizing team will be encouraging relay teams (swimmer/cyclist/runner) to be formed.
The organisers of the Garmin Malta 113k Triathlon, will also,  in conjunction with the Malta Youth Triathlon Academy, organise a series of Duathlon races (run-bike-run) on the day.  The race will be open for children and youths aged between 6 – 16 years of age.
